Day 14

Zanzibar….. A dreamy day on the island, no cars, just time out ………

Day 13

We awoke to the call of the Iman and soon after the Catholic Church angelis. The men replaced the Dave`s  altinator  , which was a very complicated process.  Our drive to Dar es Selaam was a rushed one, as we had to catch the hotel bus to the ferry for Zanzibar. The traffic into the city was  crazy: no understandable traffic rules – for example, crossing roads with a red robot  and the passing rule in Tansania is flicking your left back light to show that the road is clear, and not to pass if the driver in front indicates with a right light. The ferry trip was so comfortable as there was no strong wind – we chose to sit in the outside first class lounge, and watch the islands slowly appear.  We travelled in a hotel bus to an amazing Ocean Paradise Hotel  where we all relaxed.

Day 12

Mbeya to Morogoro.  The drive through the renowned baobab valleys  was unforgettable – these trees are scattered over a spectacular landscape. Dave experienced a loss of power and the exhaust pipe was loose.  The altinator also died. Both were fixed. We saw much game as we drove through a national park before arriving in Morogoro safe ly and stayed at a hotel which was in the heart of the town.

Day 11

Mpika to Mbeya. We visited the homestead of Shiwa Ngandu and apparently a similar party of veteran cars visited the farm seven years ago. We then crossed the Zambian border into Tansania, where it is recommended  to hire a  guide. We experienced the challenges of the border crossing with a reputation of being one of the worst for this journey. Steffen also replaced the top gasket seal  of his merc on the border. The coffee plantation lodge at Mbeya  was a wonderful place to relax with a sunset walk and swim.
